% cat filename | colrm 21 27 | cat > trimmedfile will remove columns (as in card-columns) 21-27 of filename and store the results into trimmedfile.
:1,$!colrm 50 from vi or ex will remove from column 50 through the end of line, for all lines in the file, and replace the current lines with the output.
